Presenter: William Saunders (Boston University)
Topic: Revised Temperatures for Uranus' Upper Stratosphere and Lower Thermosphere
Abstract: Voyager 2 UV stellar and solar occultations found Uranus has a warm stratosphere and hot thermosphere, heating that cannot yet be explained. In this talk, I will report on our reprocessing of archival Earth-based stellar occultations by Uranus, which finds a cooler upper stratosphere and lower thermosphere than Voyager 2 profiles. In addition, we perform forward model simulations of the Voyager 2 profiles to confirm that they are inconsistent with our Earth-based observations. Finally, I will offer a new, representative Uranus temperature profile for the upper stratosphere and lower thermosphere based on these findings.
